Full Time Student Master and Part-Time Worker

Once you registered your name to pursue Master, think twice if you are planning to do a part-time. Genuinely, a lot of my friends do a part-time work. In Malaysia, the scholarship offers to cover Master studies is very limited and the competition itself is very high. Besides, the offer usually started for the September intakes.

I chose to pursue my Master by Coursework in Applied Mathematics. The duration time for coursework is one year while if you choose Master by Research, it requires you 1.5 years or two years.

My intake is on March, where when I finished my Bachelor, I straight registered to Master. Usually, the scholarship open is not in March, so you need to find your financial sources. That's where I decided to do a part-time job.

You need to always bear in mind, even though the schedule for Master is not very hectic like Bachelor Degree, but the burden is twice actually. I was quite happy when I saw I have to attend a class for three days only. Then, I quickly find a part-time job.

That's when the challenge begins.

Master by Coursework - A lot of projects, assignments, quizzes, and self-learning.You also need to do a Dissertation for your Semester 2. When we are talking about Dissertation, it means that you need to do a lot of Research readings in order to find your own interest.

My Part-Time job - I worked 3days per week and 1 days is around 8 hours. My part-time job started at 3.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m.

Semester 1 is very challenging. I have 4 core subjects and each subject consisted of Mini Projects, quizzes, Tests and etc. There are at some point I have 2 tests on the same day. Can you imagine each test carry 30% of your grades? It means you need to take things very seriously and there is no room to make mistakes.

At some point, after I finished my part-time job, I rushed to a library to study for upcoming tests, quizzes, or presentations. Sometimes, I burned the midnight oil, I stayed until Fajr. Yes, I'm tired but this is the path that I chose. I motivated myself to don't give up and just do it.

I did give-up for my Semester 1 results. I think I did not perform very well. And I quite worried when the results came out. Sighhhh, I passed with unexpected results. To be honest, I think I failed one subject. Alhamdulillah, God really helps me.

I did my part-time job for almost 8 months. Even during my semester 2, I continued to do my part-time.

The dissertation is not an easy work. It is like you do Master by Research but for this Dissertation is not as deep as Thesis. But, still, it is not easy. Despite my busy schedule, I spent some time to read a lot of journals to find my own interest. I have a thick paper of journal with me right now.

I can't believe that I did well and right now I'm waiting for my CGPA results for my Master.

If you ask me, I won't recommend you to do a Part-Time job. It is really tiring!

p/s: Oh I forgot to mention I did receive scholarship for my second semester. hehe.
